Once Upon A Bag...

Me and my most coveted Bag (Hugo Boss) in Berlin

When I was single, I pretty much lived like a bag lady, housing over 75 bags in a small one bedroom apartment (it was me, my laptop, bags and piles of fashion magazines). Freud must have had an explanation, but at that time my ego simply ignored my unconscious and decided it liked bags (there are worse addictions, n'est-ce-pas?).

Until...Once Upon a Time in Budapest, I met a beautiful Snow White bag....and it was love at first sight.... From that moment on, my other bags slowly were put up for adoption at local vintage stores and found new parents to take care of them....

But True Bag Love comes with a Downside.

Everything else gets... well... blah.

Already since a while I'm in search of a new bag. And not just a bag. A bag that can replace THE bag. A tough job, because THE bag has accompanied me on so many adventures, and we grew as close as loving family members. THE bag also holds many happy stories. A couple of years ago my husband (then still boyfriend), Markus, and I moved in together, and a week before we got the keys to our new apartment in Amsterdam, we were invited to the Hugo Boss lounge at the Formula One in Budapest followed by a Hugo Boss event.

Formula One and Fashion in Budapest

Here, I fell in love with the roaring sounds of engines....and with an oversized white leather bag by Hugo Boss. It was love at first sight. I saw it, it saw me and we clicked. The price unfortunately did not click with my budget. So I left without it, hoping it would find somebody who would love it as much as I would. But... the next day Markus surprised me with a big box.... containing THE bag. The beginning of a menage a trois, because from that moment onwards it was Markus, me and Bag.

The bag has been there when we moved in together (carrying new keys), when we got our first pup together (carrying dog treats), when we got pregnant (carrying baby-brochures and yoga pants), when I became a mom (carrying wipes, bottles and diapers), while writing and drawing (carrying laptop, sketchbook, paint, pencils and notebooks), it has been there with me in Budapest, Amsterdam, Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, in planes, trains, automobiles and on bikes.... But... it needs replacement.... Or at least... some time off and recover from years of loyal companionship.

Of course I have been looking around to find another bag, but somehow, no bag has been as convincing as THE bag. Of course it has to be able to carry a lot on a daily base, so oversized and strong leather are mandatory. And it has to fit my urban-bohemian-coffee-on-the-go-writer-mom-artstudent-entrepreneur-freelance-lifestyle, and the style that comes with it (I like to describe it as 'urban-comfy-chic': comfortable enough to wear while running for and jumping in the metro, chic enough to jump out of the metro to have a work-lunch...).

Today I passed by an outlet store and I decided to have a quick peak. I love outlet shopping. Not because I'm cheap ('on-a-budget' would describe the situation better, I guess...), but because I love the hunt. Maybe finding a great fashion treasure within big piles of stuff, is what comes closest to men's hunt for the perfect woman.

And what did I find?

A beautiful beige leather shoulder bag, big enough to fit in my laptop and lots of other urban-bohemian-coffee-on-the-go-writer-mom-artstudent-entrepreneur-freelance-necessities.

Inspired by my new bag, I also found a great pair of soft leather beige Janet & Janet high heels. They will go great with my wide legged dark jeans (I'm a bit tired of the skinny jeans for the moment). An outfit that will be paired off nicely with a white lace baby doll I took with me as well.

A new bag is added to the family, which will give me the opportunity to give THE bag a soothing fix-up. Parting from it....is still too traumatic. Maybe one day.....

  1. Love this...

THE bag i once owned has since made its way to bag heaven, having been pre-owned by my BFF, and probably 25 people before that because it was easily 40 years old, a magical find in a vintage shop in london, which she gave me in our hometown of LA just before i hopped on a plane and headed off to live in the city where she bought the bag. It was black with beige trim and stitching and shaped a bit like a bowling bag, and was perfect in every way, matched with everything, and its late 60s vinyl composition withstood the rainiest london days, keeping all my bits and bobs safe from the elements. I re-stitched its lining about 20 times before i gave up and said enough was enough.

alas, i've not yet found its replacement...but my eyes are peeled everywhere i go...
